Resumen
La infección por el virus SARS CoV-2 tiene un amplio espectro de presentación clínica, desde pacientes con curso asintomático hasta aquellos que desarrollan un cuadro crítico con requerimiento de ingreso a unidades de cuidado intensivo (UCI). Dentro de los pacientes quienes desarrollan síntomas respiratorios, aproximadamente 85% de los casos tendrá un cuadro leve, 11-14% cursará con neumonía grave asociada a síndrome dificultad respiratoria aguda (SDRA) y 3-5% tendrá un curso crítico de la enfermedad, estos últimos con altas tasas de mortalidad en UCI.
Las diferentes dependencias de los centros hospitalarios, y de manera particular las unidades de cuidado intensivo se convirtieron en uno de los recursos de mayor valor en la pandemia, teniendo impacto sobre los desenlaces de la enfermedad y repercutiendo de manera directa en la salud pública de todos los países del mundo. Teniendo lo anterior en consideración y el colapso vivido en los sistemas de salud por el elevado número de pacientes contagiados, es importante resaltar los criterios de ingreso a UCI.
