Abstract

Introduction: Suicide prediction constitutes a challenge for health workers due to the subjectivity of some of the factors involved in this phenomenon, as well as the difficulty in measuring the biological molecules involved at the level of the central nervous system or DNA. For this reason, interest in plasma biomarkers has recently emerged for the prediction of suicidal behavior in patients with mental disorders, especially those diagnosed with major depression. The objective of this review is to determine the effectiveness of plasma biomarkers in the prediction of suicidal behavior in patients with major depression.

Methods: A scoping review was conducted based on the methodological framework proposed by Kasaju, et al. Relevant papers were identified in PubMed and Embase databases during October 2022.

Results: Significant differences were found in plasma levels of NPY, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12, monocytes, glucose, tenascin C, cortisol, kynurenine and tryptophan among patients diagnosed with major depression with suicidal behavior and healthy controls.

Conclusion: Measurement of plasma biomarkers is a potential tool for predicting suicidal behavior due to its effectiveness in patients diagnosed with major depression.
