Psychosocial profile of patients admitted to intensive care units cardiovascular and surgical in ClÍnica Universitaria Colombia

Abstract

The follow investigation had as a target characterize the psychosocial profile of the patient admitted in general and cardiovascular intensive care unit (ICU) of the Clínica Universitaria Colombia, of Bogota, in order to develop interventions that optimize the performance of the units and the patient and family wellness. The study was descriptive cross-sectional, it was held between june the 1th and december 31th of 2009, with a sample of 1.051 patients (ICU Cardiovascular: 624 and ICU General: 427). The interview guide was used as an instrument which was applied to the patient and/or their family, to get  socio-demographic information  and describe the psychological variables, behavioral and family. The information was systematized in a data base to analyzed it through SPSS to windows 15.0, and the chi square of Pearson was used. The results show that one of the most remarkable aspects refers to the support network family, similar in the two ICU. The adaptation process of the patient scored in the ICU General 73,3 % and in the ICU Cardiovascular 79%. The main signals of emotional difficulty were associated with anxiety.  Having evaluated the areas of the greatest concern to the family about of the situation of the patient, it was observed a great concern for the life expectation of him, with 20% above of ICU General. The conclusion is the quality of attention given in the UCIS must include the participation of psychology and social work (1).
