Abstract

Introduction: In the last few decades, chronic periodontitis has become a potential risk factor for the development of cardiovascular events. Based on this premise, a new paradigm arises to guide the diagnosis, prevention strategies, early intervention and treatment approaches for Chronic Periodontitis. C-Reactive Protein has turned out to be a marker for systemic inflammation associated with Coronary Artery Disease and Chronic Periodontitis. Objective: identify the C-reactive protein levels in patients with Chronic Periodontitis. Methodology: 80 patients were selected from the Periodontics Graduate program of the School of Dentistry of the Central University of Venezuela. This was a observational, prospective study. The quantitative variables used were the means and the standard deviation. To assess the correlation between variables, the Pearson’s correlation coefficient, the Chi square test of independence and the variance analysis were used for one single factor. Results: in the population sample, the ultrasensitive C-reactive protein serum level was elevated (≥ 3mg/dl) in 47 patients (58.8%). There was no significant correlation between chronic periodontitis and C-reactive protein. Conclusion: there is no association between the levels of ultrasensitive C-Reactive Protein and the presence of generalized Chronic Periodontitis.
