Abstract

Introduction: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease or fatty liver is a major cause of hepatic disease worldwide, with a prevalence of approximately 30% in adults. This condition has been associated as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular events presentation and the onset of diabetes. In our country there are no known clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with fatty liver. Objective: make a description about clinical aspects of 115 patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease diagnosis attending outpatient hepatology service of Colombia University Clinic during the study period in Bogotá. Methods: we performed a review of medical records of 115 patients diagnosed with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, attending outpatient hepatology service of Colombia University Clinic during the period from January 1st 2010 to May 31st 2013, in order to describe the clinical features of fatty liver and association with cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Results: clinical records of 115 patients were retrospectively reviewed, 54,8% were female and 45,2% male, mean age was 54 years, the principal relationship between fatty liver and metabolic syndrome was dyslipidemia that presented in 57 patients (49%). Conclusion: the diagnosis of fatty liver is set to about 20% of patients attending a specialized outpatient hepatology consult, striking a percentage of 24% debuts as cirrhosis. And there is a clear association with the metabolic syndrome in our study. Data according to international results.
