Abstract

Background: lower limb pain in children has been linked to hamstring contraction (HC) and these in turn are believed are in the sedentary population. Objectives: the cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the presence of HC in school children between 6 and 17 years old, belonging to a Bogota´s schools. Also it described the relationship between the presence of the HC with entities such as lower limb pain, physical inactivity and obesity. Methods: a survey was generated to obtain a representative sample of the school population as well as their anthropometric measurements and the angle of their knees. The results were analyzed using proportions and statistical significance tests (OR and chi-square). Results: in a sample of 521 school children it was found that the prevalence of HC was high (45.68%). There was a greater frequency of occurrence in females. The frequency was not higher in the group of overweight children, nor in obese children. There was no statistical asociation between pain and HC (OR 1.313 95% 0.9232 to 1.8678), but if there was lower prevalence of HC in the group with physical activity (OR 0.6292 95% 0.4411 to 0.8976) and higher prevalence in the sedentary group of school children (OR 1.6164 95% 1.1244 to 2.3237). Conclusions: the HC was frequent in the population of schoolchildren of low socioeconomic status and may be related to the presence of pain in lower limbs. It was also shown that there was a greater predisposition to HC in students with little physical activity and/or sedentary.
