Abstract

Objective: to estimate the prevalence of frailty by Fried’s criteria and related variables in a Colombian Andes Mountains urban old population. Material and Methods: population-based cross-sectional descriptive study. One thousand eight hundred seventy-eight four community-living people aged 60 years and over living in urban cities in coffee-grower zone in the Colombian Andes Mountains. The evaluation was carried out by professional health care managers who received intensive instruction during a 2-day training course. Frailty was defined by the presence of the following Fried’s criteria: unintentional weight loss, weakness (grip strength), exhaustion, low walking speed, and low physical activity. Covariates were grouped in four categories: sociodemographic; disease and biomedical factors; functional status and performance-based measures; and psychosocial factors. Results: the estimated prevalence of frailty was12.1%: 7%male and 17%female; pre-frailty status prevalence was 53% and 34.8% was non frail. Frailty was more common in older people, women and with low education level. Older people with frailty had higher prevalence of comorbidities and disabilities associated; they took more medicines, had a poor performance in physical measures, had low scores in cognitive assessment and were more depressed. Conclusion: prevalence of frailty in an elderly Colombian population is similar to international studies. A high percentage of pre-frailty status was found. Covariates associated with frailty was comorbidity, disability, cognitive impairment and depression.
