Abstract

Main aims of this article are to describe anatomy of the major salivary glands, to review technique, indications and contraindications of conventional sialography and to perform an update of main pathologies that affect this glandular apparatus, including sialolithiasis and sialoadenitis. As well as describing new diagnostic modalities, such as sialography by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Currently, sialography prevails as the initial study to assess obstructive and inflammatory pathology of major salivary glands. The choice of the ideal imaging modality for evaluation of salivary glandular pathology will depend on clinical presentation and diagnostic suspicion.
