Abstract
Zenker´s diverticulum is a rare condition characterized by an evagination of the esophageal mucosa and submucosa at the level of the posterior hypopharyngeal wall, between the lower pharyngeal constrictor muscle and the cricopharyngeous muscle (Killian Triangle). Based on its histological characteristics, Zenker’s diverticulum is a pseudo diverticulum resulting from a posterior mucosal outpouching that increases the intrabolus pressure and triggers a loss of muscle function. Usually it presents with dysphagia as the primary symptom and is diagnosed with endoscopy. This article discusses the case - including a video - of a 77-year old patient with mild intermittent symptoms of dysphagia leading to the decision to do an endoscopy that evidenced a Zenker’s diverticulum.
