Abstract
The white coat is perhaps the most representative symbol of the medical hierarchy against the common good of society, and denotes a body of significant and complex and varied meanings, related to the character and scientific rigor of medicine, its foundation in laboratory procedures seeking the truth, a reaction to medicine solemn and hopeless for the patient in the XIX century, and its final transformation into the whiteness of hope, healing and life. Trace the historical path of this object is vital to understanding the origins of contemporary medical thinking and how it sustains their being.
