Abstract
Introduction: Monkeypox disease involves a zoonosis viral entity first identified in 1970 in humans, whose incidence has increased markedly in 2022 reaching 83.371 confirmed cases until December, reaching non-endemic countries. It has been mainly associated with symptoms such as fever, skin rash, and adenomegaly. Mortality is low, but it can cause a wide range of complications that affect the quality of life of individuals. Objective: To present a narrative review of the most relevant aspects of monkeypox in humans in relation to epidemiological and pathophysiological aspects, diagnostic and therapeutic approach, prognosis and rehabilitation. Methods: Narrative review non-systematic of the most relevant articles on human monkeypox in Medline, ClinicalKey, UpToDate, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, Pubmed databases. Results: Monkeypox can cause a spectrum of symptoms in humans, from benign localized skin lesions to severe systemic symptoms and even death. Its unusual geographic distribution in the last year represents a disease that tests health systems in the world. Conclusions: It is essential to know the most relevant aspects in relation to a pathogen whose behavior and distribution are constantly changing, in order to reduce the impact on public health.
