Resumen
La bata blanca es quizás el símbolo más representativo de la jerarquía médica frente al común de la sociedad, y denota un cuerpo de significantes y significados variados y complejos, relacionados al carácter y rigor científico de la medicina, a su fundamentación en los procedimientos de laboratorio que buscan la verdad, a una reacción frente a la medicina solemne y desesperanzadora para el paciente en el siglo XIX, y su final transformación hacia la blancura de la esperanza, la cura y la vida. Trazar el camino histórico de este objeto es vital para entender los orígenes del pensamiento médico contemporáneo y en qué se sustenta su ser.
