Abstract

Introduction: the natural course of hemophilia presents with repeated hemarthrosis followed by the development of chronic synovitis. This results in the destruction of the cartilage (chondrolysis) and the development of osteoarthrosis of the joint. Some of the treatment options include education, prophylaxis, medical management and surgery. Radiosynoviorthesis (RSO) is part of the medical treatment envisaged to stabilize the synovial membrane by injecting an intra-joint radionuclide. Objective: to undertake a review of radiosynoviorthesis, its usefulness, indications and costs in the hemophilic patient. Methods: the keywords were used to search in MEDLINE and COCHRANE. 15 relevant articles were found and 11 secondary sources, all of which were used to prepare this review. Conclusions: radiosynoviorthesis is an effective procedure to control chronic synovitis. In countries where radionuclides are available, RSO is the first line of treatment for hemophilic arthropathy.
