Abstract

The importance that the institutions that provide health services have infection committees adequately formed and functional was established since the nineteen century, as an essential component in the process of hospital infection control. Objective: to determine which is the state of formation and functioning of infection committees in hospitals in Colombia. Methods: a cross sectional study was conducted in 44 hospitals across 5 cities in Colombia, by sending a survey form via email. The survey requested information regarding the Committee members, conducting training and assessment of the adherence to them by health personnel of the institution, and calculation of various internationally accepted indicators of nosocomial infection. Results: analyses were based on information provided by the 44 institutions. 20.9% have all members of the Committee and the process of conducting training and evaluation of adherence to them is complete in 80% of cases. In relation with the calculation of the indicators of infection, 51.3% of the hospitals reported which was the percentage distribution of infections according to type of infection, and 16.3% of intensive care units surveyed calculated infection rates associated with invasive devices properly. Difficulties were encountered in calculating rates of surgical wound infection. Conclusions: these findings show that in Colombia it is necessary to strengthen the role of the Infection control committees in health institutions.
