Abstract
Fatty tissue, is in fact a true organ with a role far beyond the classical idea of a lipid reserve. Current breakthroughs and scientific findings have shown that it is a highly active metabolic tissue, with endocrine and hemato-immunological functions. Leptin(LEP) is one of the adipocytic-origin hormone mediators that has led to a true revolution in the biology and pathobiology of metabolic syndrome(MS). We recently celebrated the twentieth anniversary of LEP’s discovery. However, scientists A. W. Hetherington and S. W. Ranson from Northwestern University Medical School (Chicago, Illinois, USA) already hypothesized the existence of LEP based on the classical adiposity-associated hypothalamic injury experiments back in 1940. The purpose of this short paper, is to present the background for the scientific rationale that unveiled the existence of LEP, and provide a essential conceptual framework for the present and future of this cell communication mediator.
